07/17/2007 Entry: "June 22, 2007 Pomeroy, WA to Lenore, ID"

Pomeroy had even more adventures in store for us after Minwah's entry. After we left the Pomeroy library we headed to the town park, which allowed camping with the permission of the sheriff. As we arrived, a company picnic was just finishing up. They had all sorts of tasty food to eat. As Minwah and I were settling into the gazebo, Seager strategically stood around the picnic tables, and when he finally heard someone say, "If no one takes this, I'm going to throw it away!" he scored us some tasty pie. After the word got around that we were accepting food donations we were served some delicious ribs, german chocolate cake, two different kinds of pies, and some Pepsi to wash it down. Mmm mmm, 2nd lunch!

(Note, to those who are interested I am abandoning my vegetarian eating habits while biking. Need the protein. Orian bought a gun this summer, so I guess if he shoots something I'll eat that, too).

We hung around the park all afternoon, ate dinner, and got ready to go to sleep in the gazebo, which was in the middle of the park lawn. We had been assured by the sheriff that the shelter over the picnic tables was safe from the sprinklers, which would come on at 5am. However, Seager's experience with sleeping in town parks led him to suspect otherwise, and he slept restfully. It was a good thing, too..

At 1am, the first set of sprinklers came on. The first set didn't hit us, but since they had come on way before 5am, Seager's senses were alerted. At 2 or 3am the first set turned off and a different set turned on...this set was right by the gazebos. Seager quickly ran around putting pots on all the sprinkler heads, but the water flow was so strong that we had to stand on them to keep the pot lids on! We tried putting logs on the pots but eventually the logs fell off too. So we moved our stuff and slept over by the road and the bathrooms, where we caught a few more hours of sleep.

Since we were still in the desert we got up early...around 530am, I think. The first 5-10 miles was tough...there was a small climb of maybe 5 miles. When we got to the summit the view was not what I was expecting after the climb...I saw flat fields stretching out to the horizon, with some mountains in two directions at the edge. Over the top, the way down was a steep grade and you could see that the flat fields were probably made up of hills with flat tops. The downhill was long and then there was a small headwind into Clarkston/Lewiston. The 30 miles from Pomeroy to Lewiston went by quickly. The road out of Lewiston was quite busy. I found two boxes of fruit snack-type things on the side of the road, and both Seager and I grabbed some of those. Minwah rode right by without noticing them, even though I stacked them on top of each other and opened them up.

After Lewiston we were in Idaho, and as we moved further into Idaho the scenery became prettier. Out of Lewiston we followed a river aways, and we began to see more greenery. I stopped to take pictures of the pillar basalt and stick my feet in the river. We rode up to Lenore, ID, a very small town with just a post office and community center. We camped on the flats by the river. I soaked my legs in the icy mountain water and washed some clothes; Minwah and Seager both took a dip. There were a lot of bees by the river in the late afternoon, probably trying to cool themselves on the hot day.

Later in the evening, Seager taught us how to play Pooh sticks. We played on the bridge into Lenore (the town was off the road). Pooh sticks is played like this:
Find a lot of sticks
Everyone takes a stick and drops it into the river on the upstream side of the bridge
You then run to the downstream side of the bridge to see whose stick wins
Repeat until you run out of sticks.

There are only two rules:
1. Everyone drops their stick at the same time (after someone says 'Ready, set, Pooh sticks!)
2. Don't let your glasses fall in the river.
The sticks can be different sizes and can be dropped at any place in the river.
